House at the End of the Street film ending

House at the End of the Street is a psychological thriller movie. A young teenage girl Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) and her mother Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) move into a new neighborhood next to a home where a previous murder took place. Next door neighbor Ryan (Max Thierlot) is the last surviving member of his family.

House at the End of the Street has a twist ending. If you haven't watched House at the End of the Street yet, beware the film ending is featured below with movie spoilers.

***Movie Spoilers***

Elissa hides in the basement. Sarah falls down the stairs. A deceased officer Weaver's body sits up against the wall with a fatal abdominal wound. Elissa watches Ryan stand over her mother.

Ryan throws Sara on his shoulder. He walks toward the door, noticing broken glass scattered on the ground.   Ryan drops Sara on the ground. He inspects the broken glass and immediately scans the area.

Elissa tries to remain hidden. She makes a sudden noise. Ryan grabs a knife. He enters behind the side space to go after Elissa. Elissa crawls as fast as she can, kicking Ryan on the face to stun him. Elissa retrieves officer Weaver's gun and shoots at Ryan. Ryan takes cover.

Ryan flips the power switch off. It is pitch black. Elissa turns on the flashlight. The flashlight turns on and off. She finally turns on the flashlight to find Ryan coming toward her with a knife in hand.

Elissa shoots Ryan several times. A bullet punctures his right chest and his shoulder. He drops to the ground. Elissa slowly advances toward Ryan. She searches his front pocket for the car keys.

All of a sudden, Ryan grabs a hold of Elissa. She struggles to get free, where Sara swings a mallet at Ryan's head to knock him out cold.

The truck is ready to go. Sarah and Elissa are packed and ready to move. Elissa stands in the backyard, near the tree Ryan indicated that has a smiley face. Sarah asks if Elissa is okay.

Elissa continues to stare at the tree. She asks her mother what she sees when looking at the tree. Sarah says that it's just a tree. Elissa agrees with her mom. She is now calm. The mother and daughter leave.

In a mental institute, we see Ryan shacked up and sitting with a blank stare. A flashback scene reveals the mother telling Carrie Anne to enjoy the cake. Dressed up as a girl, an upset and defiant Ryan tells his mother he is Ryan. The mother slaps Ryan and tells him to shut up because he is Carrie Anne.

    1. Hi,

In my opinion, there is nothing in the tree. Elissa figures out that Ryan made her believe he was a genuine guy.

If you remember the first scene, she tried to find the face in the tree. Ryan told her to keep looking. For example, a person tell another a joke. They don't want to feel awkward not laughing, so they laugh without really understanding the the joke.

Elissa asked her mother if she sees anything on the tree. Sarah replies back that it is just a tree. Elissa realizes that Ryan manipulated her with his charm and niceness. Elissa thought he was the perfect guy for her.

I don't think there is anything in the tree. Many people are too trusting that others can easily take advantage of them.

Did you see anything on the tree? Thanks.

    2. There was a face in the tree, but I think you are right that Elissa figures our that Ryan was just tricking her into thinking he was a good guy by showing her the tree thing.

    3. Thanks Yo. I do believe there is no face in the tree. It is manipulation because Elissa tries her best to notice the face. Ryan appears innocent, almost too genuine. Thanks again.

    4. But she said "its a face" before he said anything

  2. What exactly happened at the end? Does this mean that Ryan was forced to become a Carrie-Ann by his parents? And why does Ryan need to "find" Carrie-Ann in his life?

    1. @TheMexincanSuperman1,

The House at the End of the Street has a similar ending to the Sleepaway Camp movie. Both mothers attempted to convert their sons into girls. However, Ryan is aware that he is not a girl.

In this movie case, Ryan's parents were punishing him for his sister's death. In my opinion, Ryan needs Carrie Anne to connect him with his sister. He probably experienced PTSD (Axis I disorders) during the moment his sister died, which manifested into multiple Axis II disorders.

Ryan is unable to move past his sister's death. As long as Ryan keeps Carrie Anne close to him (kidnapped girls), he is able to function in life. The physical and mental abuse caused Ryan to develop psychological problems. He was never treated for his sister's death. I'm sure most people that experience a major trauma such as this require counseling and therapeutic treatment.

The worst aspect of Ryan's life is his parents punishing him. I remember seeing the mom shoot up with heroine or some other type of drug. The parents were dealing with the death of Carrie Anne in their personal way.

Many serial killers develop disturbing traits leading back to their childhood. We see this in Identity. Having a Carrie Anne lookalike around enables Ryan to cope with his sister's death. He is no longer a person who is classified as normal. If you look back to his PTSD (sister's death) and the dress-up punishment (psychological + physical), Ryan has obviously lost touch of reality.

PTSD, social anxiety, and multiple conditions that can be verified in the DSM. Ryan needs Carrie Anne to cope, as this is his way to deal with an untreated loss. In a way, Ryan was experiencing hate associated with his gender reversal. This type of treatment lays down the framework to serial killing (Sleepaway Camp).

Check out my movie explanation on this movie here.

Thanks for commenting. Also, this is my personal opinion from researching and writing about mental disorders, psychological issues, and therapeutic treatments. Thanks.

  3. So at the beginning it was a random girl who killed the parents???

So his plan was to dress up Elissa as his sister?

The little girls running around were trying to get away or? because i heard him say " it's going to be alright, she wont tell"

    1. Ryan killed his parents. The little sister already died on the swings. Ryan was forced to become Carrie Anne. This is the same plot as Sleepaway Camp.

Both characters are compromised, albeit Ryan escapes his troubled past through kidnapping random women to use as Carrie Anne stand-ins.

Ryan's desire to grieve his sister's loss is far more powerful than Elissa. Eventually, Elissa would assume Carrie Anne.

Provide a short summary of the girl scene and the last dialogue in detail. I can't remember this scene too well. Thanks for commenting.

  4. as for the face in the tree, didnt he say that she hit her head? mybe thats where her "face"/body hit and that is why the tree has a huge gash in it?
as for the person who killed the parents, i think it was ryan after being forced to be carrie ann and he had enough of it, he just couldnt handle that his parents blamed him for her death, and maybe after the abuse he felt her was partly her, so in order to be him he still had to have a carrie ann around?
    idk just my opinions

    1. Well said. I agree with you on Ryan killing his parents after accepting blame for his sister's death and then becoming Carrie Anne. He is psychologically impaired from his parents mentally and physically torturing him.

As for the face, I believe there is no face. Ryan tried to convince Elissa that there was a ace, but Elissa didn't see anything and treated him. He views him as the right guy because is genuine. Little does she know that Ryan is like another Norman Bates.

      Thans for commenting.

  5. At the beginning of the movie Ryan killed his parents and ran into the woods throwing all the clothes into the dam. the police found the clothes but nobody. That was explained when they went to the party with all the other neighbors.

    1. This is a good point to connect us with the catalyst. Also, the cop knew the family, Ryan and his sister.

The murder took place soon after Ryan lost his mind. He had enough. He eliminated the threat - his parents. Thanks for commenting.

  6. When Elissa had moved in, Carrie-Ann was after killing Elissa. Was Carrie-Ann actually alive then or was that another kidnapped girl, Peggy Jones?

    1. Carrie-Ann died when she was a little girl, so this one was one of the many women Ryan kidnapped (but not Peggy Jones yet, she comes later in the movie). Knowing that the girl wasn't Carrie-Ann and that it wasn't her who killed the parents, though, I am wondering whether she really wanted to kill Elissa or if she wanted to warn her about Ryan (or if she was just trying to escape)...

    4. I agree that Elissa probably feared anyone connected to Ryan. If a woman is drugged and restrained in an underground room, she will fear whomever is around.

The first Carrie-Ann tried to attack Carrie Anne out of fear. She wanted to escape Ryan. Moviegoers are tricked into believing that Carrie-Anne is indeed his real sister. Just The Sixth Sense, the writer and director can't reveal the twist until the end. Thanks for commenting.

  7. Maybe as far as the tree..maybe carrie ann is buried under that tree&that's why he "sees"a smiley face bc that's what he remembers about her. And the dad did come out of the woods and said " its done". Clearly they buried her body. Wouldn't be a far leap to assume its under/next to the tree.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ryan doesn't know exactly where his sister is buried. He used the tree stunt as a way to gain Elissa's trust. We see her confused about the tree.

It is like she doesn't see what Ryan is talking about, albeit she trusts him enough to let her guard down. The scene is a defining moment. Elissa looks at the tree with no idea what it means, but then stares back as Ryan.

It is the same type of trust we see in Scream with Billy and Sydney. The killer knows how to open doors that are closed. Thanks for commenting.

  8. If the cop knew all along that Ryan's parents were making him pretend to be Carrie Anne, why wasn't the cop suspicious when the parents were killed? The cop would've known that Carrie Anne was really Ryan.. so why didn't the cop arrest Ryan or anything?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion, I don't think the cop knew of all the murder details. He was trying to protect Ryan because he knew the kid got bullied for being strange. Any kid who was thought to have lost their parents would be vulnerable to such insults.

Nonetheless, the cop showed us in the end that he never knew about Ryan's secret. The cop said I protected you as a way to reveal that he watched over Ryan while the other kids and the town insulted and criticized the young kid.

We see the local high school kids torment Ryan. Ryan snapped one of the kid's leg to show he would not tolerate them anymore. There is a lot of rage within Ryan, as his parents created him into a monster. They psychologically tortured Ryan to make him pay for Carrie Ann's death.

It is the parents who should have taken accountability. It is unlikely the cop knew Ryan was the killer. However, it is possible the town could have known that Ryan was dressed up like a girl and made fun of him.

I woud meed to watch the movie again to put the pieces together. I know for a fact that Ryan experienced the same type of mental disorder than the Angela character in Sleepaway Camp. The two movies are identical.

      Thanks for commenting.

    2. i thought they showed the cop being there when the parents were getting high and the kids were on the swing...
so the cop knew the girl is dead
and later knew that they were dressing up ryan as CA
so finally he must have known Ryan killed the parents because he had said to Alica's mom that he was the one who personally went to fetch Ryan from his aunt's place after the death of his parents..
which cant be true since he lived with his parents as CA the entire time !!

Hope i got it right... or else i gotto see this movie again :P :P

      Delete
    3. thats why ryan probably said that the cop was just covering up his own ass not looking out for ryan..
since he knew all along what went on and yet didnt do anything so they wouldnt be caught for the drugs and for letting a kid die when they were supposed to be there guarding them... :P :P

      Delete
    4. Which is the point of the movie I can't wrap my mind around, the cop had to know Ryan killed the parents, right? There was no stroke victim aunt, right? Or did Ryan kill his parents, run into woods naked, make it all the way up to this aunt? Still... cop knoooows there is no Carrie Anne. Seems more likely he should have been more suspicious, alarmed, guarded about Ryan.

  9. Hi Astral Writer,

Thanks for your time on writing your comments, but could you please keep out other movies? I rented both House as Sleepaway and I do not have to see that anymore. This is an explaination for House at the end of the street, not Sleepaway Camp. To be honest, if I knew you would give spoilers on Sleepaway, I would've waited reading this particular site. Please remember this for any future explainations, as it isn't nice to pay for a movie and others spoil it for you.

    Bye, Lily.

When you arrive on my movie websites, prepare to read spoilers. In the slogan for this Film Ending website, it reads Movie Endings with Movie Spoilers.

Most slasher movie fans know the twist ending to Sleepaway Camp. Whereas the movie is not identical, the trauma is similar. I use movie examples to make the connection.

Sorry for ruining the twist ending to Sleepaway Camp. Thanks for commenting Lily.

  30. So they wanted Ryan to be Carrie Ann because she died? And the other "Carrie Ann" that had escaped , was she trying to kill Elissa , escape , and she just brought the knife for protection? Also who is Peggy Jones?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Peggy Jones is that Penn State college girl who served Ryan at the local diner. The other Carrie-Anne was scared, so she grabbed the knife for her protection. She probably feared everyone around him, as most hostages would in this inhibited environment. She tried to warn Elissa.

  31. Did you guys also notice when Elissa went to Ryan's house she found things in the trashcan like; tampons, blue contacts box & a wallet with ID. The ID belonged to the girl that gave him the food along with milk at the food stop place. He kidnapped her when he disposed of the other body. I noticed because her sweater hung from the wall & she was wearing the same one that same night.(:
