***Batman spoilers***
The Dark Knight Rises ending involves a Miranda reveal. Selina kills Bane to save Batman. Batman and Catwoman team up to end Miranda's reign. Gordon finally discovers Batman's true identity in a hero and coat moment of truth. Batman obviously dies in the Bat plane to save Gotham City. Does Alfred dream of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle at an Italian or Paris cafe? Will Robin John Blake become the next Gotham City protector as Nightwing?
If we take the Batman survives route, then Bruce Wayne must have money saved up to make the trip to Europe. He also has an abdomen wound. He would have to swim a few miles back to Gotham City. We believe Gordon reads the Bruce Wayne's eulogy with quoting "The Tale of Two Cities," a Charles Dickens novel written in 1859. John Blake reveals his full name as Robin John Blake.
It is possible Bruce leaves the bag behind for Blake, realizing the detective is worthy after visiting the Wayne Manor to speak about the orphans, his respect for Wayne as a kid, and that Batman needs to return. The Dark Knight Rises cliffhanger makes sense, as Blake will eventually become Nightwing.
The Alfred grave scene is emotional. Alfred feels he let down the Wayne parents for allowing Bruce to reach his end. Bruce gave back plenty to Gotham. Bruce honored his long-time butler with a handsome fortune. He also improved the orphan program, which is now home at Wayne Manor.
The Alfred cafe scene is too predictable to believe Bruce Wayne survived the atomic blast. We've seen many say Batman is not in the plane prior to shooting missiles at skyline buildings to make a path for the Bat plane. Batman is indeed in the Bat plan all the way up to the final shot with 5 seconds left on the bomb timer.
There is no possible way that Batman survives the atomic explosion. Batman is not Superman. He is a man with extreme fighting skills, cool weapons and gadgets. Batman's grim facial expression (big decision) is enough to convey he accepts his fate. Bruce Wayne no longer fears death. Without enduring the pit prison experience, for what seems to be a few months, Batman may have taken another route to disarm the atomic bomb. He goes the distance to face Bane (the man who injured his back) to retrieve the remote detonator.
Batman dies in the end. Alfred imagines Bruce Wayne alive in a dream sequence. We saw another dream sequence with Ra's in the pit prison. There is no reason to think the Legend can't end with a dream. Maybe Alfred dies in his sleep. He wants more than anything to see Bruce happy. It is his last wish. The dream ending establishes happiness, complimenting the movie tagline "The Legend Ends". Blake will take over as Nightwing. What do you think? Thanks.
LOL!? First of all... Why would Alfred "dream" of Bruce and Selina? When Alfred met them all he knew was she was a master theif and by the time he left he wasn't aware there was anything between them. If anything he would have dreamed of Bruce and Rachel or at least Miranda... Also the expression of Bruce's face isn't Grim, it looked as if he was accepting a big decision. To leave his formal life and continue with a "Clean Slate." Same device that he promised Selina. Also they confirmed he fixed the auto pilot, Batman is a master planner guy, he planned it out. Also Nolan confirmed he survived. Man kill yo self.
ReplyDeleteBatman was accepting a big decision to sacrifice himself. People can't control their dreams or final thoughts before death. We never see Selina's face in the scene. As the movie audience, we know that it is Selina.
DeleteAlfred has no clue in his mind to dream of Selina. Why the hell would Alfred dream about Rachel. He knows that Rachel loved Dent? Would Alfred think Bruce's happiness is a woman who died loving another man?
You're a fool to think some weak autopilot fix 6 months prior is enough to suggest Batman survived. If you think Batman survived, then he is as weak a hero as your lame argument. Batman died! End of story!
p.s. If Batman is alive as you mention with Nolan confirming this after the first weekend, then Nolan is the best cliche screenwriter in Hollywood.
What interview does Christopher Nolan give to confirm Batman is alive? It took him a few years to discuss the Inception ending. Doubt he discussed the film on the weekend.
DeleteNolan is quick to confirm Batman survived? Provide the link and the story.
It's part one of a two part series, he isn't dead, go on IMDB and type in Batman: The Dark Knight returns and it will come up with the part 1 (2012) and part 2 (2013) so BAM! Astral you idiot! LAWL!!
Delete@Tyler,
DeleteThanks for the comment. Disagree with IMDb and the next Batman news. Thanks.
Batman dies, freeing Bruce from needing to be the Batman and allowing him to have a real life. Should WB continue with this ark (and I for one would like to see them do this as opposed to a reboot) it would make more sense to me to see Blake become Nightwing. Becoming Batman, imo, makes no sense for Gotham to mourn and idolise Batman as a symbol of hope/salvation and then accept he has somehow returned?
ReplyDeletePerhaps though the entire ending can be described as one of hope, which was a major theme running through the entire movie. Lucius "Hopes" Bruce survived by using the autopilot. Alfred "Hopes" Bruce has now found the peace he craved. Blake "Hopes" in a future where he can make a real difference and the viewer "Hopes" for there is always someone out there to fight the evil in the world and to always provide a ray of hope to us in dark times....and to HOPE for a Nightwing spinoff lol!
Great analysis. Good valid points. "Hope" is indeed the foundation in the last act. Darkness is a constant force in the movie.
DeleteBruce engages rather quickly to fight crime again. Nightwing in a spinoff will be interesting.
I think choosing the dream theme is viable. People suggest that this movie is not Inception. Stating that Alfred is dreaming conveys realism. We all dream. Nothing wrong with evaluating possible outcomes.
Thanks for commenting. well supported. Thanks.
Batman is Death and Bruce survived. in the end you see gordan on gpd roof wondering about the batman symbol on the lamp he touched it to be sure that this is real then hes looking for him. the alfred scene is real. catwomen and bruce sitting there and she wears bruce mothers necklace. and at last , you see batman few seconds before you see 5seconds left on bomb, and cause that mashine got autopilot he just eject. dont forget bruce learned to fear the death . that make him stronger.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting. Do you think that anyone in Europe should recognize Bruce Wayne? Or is he unnoticeable to the world? Clean Slate is a program intended to erase a life.
DeleteBruce and Selina are two different people. Selina is a former criminal who fears the police. Clean Slate helps her to escape her crimes. HOwever, society tunes in to celebrities. Bruce Wayne is a celebrity.
Was the Batman plane too far away to see Batman eject? Feel the autopilot is weak exposition. Even a quick flashback to show this scene explains more than to leave open the gaping holes.
You have good points. Thanks for the explanation. I wrote about Batman surviving until I reanalyzed the ending again. Thanks again.
so the next 3 movies will may handle about batman robin and catwomen versus pinguino / mr.freeze / ivy and may mr ???. may joker get his comeback never say inpossible . if hollywood get enough money (and they will) then there will be an next batman movie. c.bale said he will ever comeback as batman if nolan needs him
ReplyDeleteWould be exciting. These past three Batman movies are well written. Nolan is like Cameron. Both directors are great writers and directors. They are true auteurs.
DeleteThanks again.
i really hope your not comparing nolan to james cameron... because they are nothing alike...
Delete@Brenda,
DeleteThey are both visionary directors that write and direct their own movies. Both have made two movies that grossed more than $400 million in the domestic box office. I would say that makes them alike.
Bruce Wayne survives. Nolan confirmed it in an interview: ever since he started the saga, he wanted to finish it this way (if he was ever to finish it). Batman dies as a symbol. He's gone. The new symbol would become Nightwing, if there's a new saga with him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment. Don't you think the Alfred scene is too cliche? Predictable? Autopilot, bat signal, bag, and other plot clues give us hope.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate it if you drop a link to that interview. It took Nolan awhile to discuss the Inception ending.
Thanks for commenting.
Bruce Wayne died and Alfred was fantasizing.
ReplyDeleteEnd of story.
@Juliana,
DeleteThanks for the comment.
I agree that Bruce Wayne died too. I'm not 100 percent sure how to classify the cafe scene. It will take analyzing Alfred's cafe narration in the turning point and Ra's in the pit to connect the dots.
According to Michael Caine in a Screen Rant interview, the Inception ending is not a dream. Therefore, a movie about lucid dreaming ends without a dream.
Evaluating the ending for reality can explain whether it is a dream, fantasy, imagination, and or just there to make us think. Film experts are suggesting the cinematic choices in shot selection convey reality.
Since you watched the movie twice, can you remember the ending scene in your mind with extreme detail. If you can, will you be able to write a spoiler to this cafe scene without any analysis. Write what you see since there is no dialogue. There is a cinematic score thought. Sound plays an important role in setting the tone.
Thanks for the comment. I believe you commented on another article as well.
So we have two camps. Those who think Batman survives at the end of the film (which I think are the majority) and those who think he died.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to walk you through this and show how I came to answer the question, Does Batman die in TDKR? I'm a film director myself, so some of my conclusions are based on how Nolan uses cinematic techniques to tell you what happened to Batman at the end of this movie.
There was a recent interview which you can listen to online in which Christopher Nolan talks about a constant theme in his films - that of point of view. He talks about how he is interested in how people have a subjective view of the world and yet we all believe there is an objective world out there, if only we could work it out.
If you look at Memento, the hero ends the film with us now realizing he has kidded himself into believing he is looking for the killer of his wife, because the truth is to painful to bear. He would rather live in a world of his own imagining which provides him a feeling of hope; a hope that he will one day catch the killer, even though that killer doesn't exist. This hope gives him a reason for living.
Do you recognize that theme - give the people hope so when you disappoint them, the pain will be all the greater.
Lets look at the final scene in TDKR. Alfred sees Bruce, just as he dreamed he would one day see him - alive and happy. Previously, Nolan has made a big point of having Alfred express his dream.
Now, in this scene, point of view is very important. This scene is filmed and edited so we see it completely from Alfred's point of view. On Alfred, we are in close up. Whereas when we are looking at Bruce, we are seeing him from Alfred's point of view - ie: a long shot. At no point do we go close on Bruce. At no point does the POV switch to Bruce's - as you would normally do in a scene with two characters (for example talking to each other).
If Nolan wanted to tell us Bruce was alive, or to show the scene from both Alfred and Bruce's point of view, he would have cut to a close shot of Bruce or shown Alfred from a distance.
He doesn't do that and the reason he doesn't is because he wants us to see Bruce from Alfred's point of view; as if we are inside Alfred's mind.
Another device he uses to emphasize this is the score. The big drum beat comes while we are close on Alfred, just BEFORE we cut to the shot of Bruce acknowledging him. Again, this reinforces the feeling that we are experiencing Alfred's subjective view of this scene.
If Nolan had wanted to show a more objective view of this scene, and make is unambiguously clear that Batman was there, he could have shot the scene wide, to detach us from Alfred's mind/pov.
Yes - there are plenty of clues to allow us to believe Batman lived, such as the reveal with the autopilot. Again this is deliberate. Nolan is giving us clues but stops well short of actually giving us an objective answer.
Nolan gives us clues, some facts which mean it is possible Batman survived. But when we see him, we see him from the point of view of a man who desperately wants to see him alive and happy.
So the answer is - there is no answer. The answer is, Nolan has deliberately left this open. Because he wants you to ask yourself the question - "what do you believe in?" or, perhaps that should be "what do you want to believe in?"
Thanks Third Contact. It’s great to have another filmmaker here discussing the Batman movie.
DeleteNolan's subjective (what we see) and objective (what we interpret) notions convey realism and fiction. Society has a subjective view because they depend on seeing the truth (depend on media for news). Objective view is using cognitive perception to think beyond mass belief. We can watch a movie, accepting the narration as we see it.
Dream interpretation is real. I have deciphered many dreams on a few of my dream websites. In several instances, people have shared their exact dream. We discuss the dream how it relates to dream analysis. In the end, the dreamer finds an important message to apply to the waking life.
Many times a filmmaker can shoot an ending that has no obvious explanation. They want us to fill the plot voids to come up with our own conclusion.
Memento is written in reverse chronological order. It has one of the best twist endings in movies. We also run TwistEndings.com. If we open with the ending, then it is possible that moviegoers may not want to investigate how the murder happens (Sunset Boulevard opens with a death and works in chronological order).
Memento has an intriguing plot designed to for the big payoff (twist ending). The protagonist has hope to find the murderer. We have another obstacle with his amnesia because he has to write down messages to remember moments. As the audience, we feel that he may never find his wife's killer. We have hope because we care about this character (original author humanizes this character). Nolan films this movie in a way to put us in the detective seat.
Your hope message makes sense. We hope for a good outcome, so when it doesn't work out we are disappointed. I felt that way after hoping that we see one last exorcism in The Devil Inside. The ending disappointed many people.
Nolan uses mind flash to explain Alfred's dream narration. Bruce listens to Alfred share his dream.
In the last scene, dreamers have dreams from their point of view. I had very vivid dreams last night. They were almost lucid, but I didn't choose to question their reality as I have done on several occasions.
We then see Alfred's "point of view" in the movie end. You're right the music score and allowing us into the scene.
Nolan is giving clue to provide hope. If Nolan leaves out the clues, the ending is even more ambiguous.
You're right about subjective view of Alfred, whose emotional breakdown is due in part to his desire to see Bruce happy.
You provide the best answer - "there is no answer." As Nolan has stated in his interview with wired about ambiguity and those who have children view Inception differently. In Inception, the film ending is thus a reality. Michael Caine also elaborated on the ending as not a dream.
I want to believe that Bruce Wayne as Batman took no chances with saving his Gotham. His mind is on the same wavelength as the astronauts in Deep Impact. They take no risk. The astronauts give the world a chance to live on. In the movie ending, Bruce chooses to find meaning in his life leading up to the atomic blast.
Batman is a real hero that sacrificed his life to save Gotham. Bruce Wayne can never come back after he gets bored and or hear that Gotham needs a protector. This makes a better ending than his desire to retire and wants to live a better life.
Intelligent points with excellent evidence. You wrap up the analysis with a question rather than a statement. Thanks for commenting.
Hi, i am a film maker too, graduated in media production. This last theory of "point of view" and "hope" is interesting but, as a director, Nolan made a visual code to "dream scenes". When we see the scene with Liam Neeson, we KNOW for sure it's a dream because he vanishes at the end. In this movie, dreams are presented as dreams. So, if this was really a dream, it would be stated as that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the point of view camera position, isn't necessary a tool to make "inside your mind" things. Alfred is somehow spying on Bruce Wayne's new life and decides not to get closer (as he saId earlier). That's why we, as audience tied to Alfred's point of view, never get close to Bruce.
Hi Luis,
DeleteGreat to have a filmmaker here. Thanks for visiting.
You share some interesting cinematic choices as they apply to dream imagery in film aesthetics. But what if we choose to view the Ra's scene as a hallucination rather than a dream? Would this change the cafe scene into a mind flash?
Bruce's back was badly injured. He had multiple things going on in his mind. The pressure to escape the pit and his physical trauma could bring on temporary psychosis that causes auditory hallucinations. The pit is thus a Hell hole. It is impossible to escape, with only a child possessing the ability to make the jump.
I understand your "point of view" shot. You make interesting points as an experienced filmmaker. I graduated from UCSB(film theory) in Film & Media and also completed another film production degree program. Screenwriting is my main film strength.
In one advanced film analysis course, we watched a French film that ended with a wide shot of what is likely a dream. I can't remember the film. We analyzed this film with time elements. The course is broken down into five project - time, space, causality, narration, and sound.
We debated on the ending sequence. There is a wide shot of a place that connects the protagonist to his childhood memory (home). The protagonist had a stepbrother who he tormented as a child. This stepbrother made it a point to blow his head off right in front of him.
The last shot of an old home is center in frame. It is a wide shot. It is quiet, yet we see a vividly bright house framed inside a dark tunnel. I identified this as a dream since the protagonist is revisiting the childhood home again. It is possibly his last moment because he may have taken an overdose. We can't be sure as this ending is open for interpretation.
Based on the Alfred's discovery of Bruce, the revelation appears to be the first time these two characters connect again. Visually, we see a medium shot of Bruce acknowledging Alfred.
I really want to view the last sequence again. I know a few dream experts that can evaluate the ending through dream analysis to determine whether it is indeed a dream or an imagination. I have experience with dream analysis, but I am no expert in the field.
Selina is a career criminal. She may be young, but she has a desire to engage in small heists of expensive items. In the narration, we see this female criminal steal fingers, pearl necklace, a sports car, cracks a safe, and even double-crosses Batman. She tells Batman to leave Gotham behind because he owes nothing to the city and has already given everything. Criminals murdered Bruce's parents.
Batman fights crime to protect the city from crime. He takes the fall for Dent's crimes to protect the city, as the Dent Act would be deemed invalid and could free many prisoners. I don't see Bruce finding a new life with Selina. Clean Slate can erase criminal history and even a life, but Selina is always going to have criminal tendencies.
In visual aesthetics, we see imagery of Alfred explaining the cafe scene in around the turning point. Nolan uses mind flashes to show us what Alfred is thinking, including his narrative to guide us.
You made some strong expert points. The ending is very powerful because it has us all analyzing it from many angles. Thanks again.
That's a very literal way of looking at the end of the movie and although it seems that almost everyone agrees with you, I personally think that Ash's explanation (below) gets to the heart of Christopher Nolan's artistic vision.
DeleteHi Marlena,
DeleteI agree with you that Ash captured the essence of Nolan artistic vision. He wrote a poetic comment. The ending is open for interpretation. The majority of viewers are choosing Bruce is alive.
We see and hear clues. Then, we watch an Italian cafe scene deliver the payoff. Is it real? Fantasy? Dream? Hallucination? Imagination?
The main characters each have their moment of hope, believing in their mind that Bruce is alive. Moviegoers are given hope clues to believe in the obvious rather than pull back to analyze possible theories.
Thanks for the comment.
I wish i was film maker alas i am not. there are a lot of interesting explanations on the dream sequence. But in my humble opinion i think the ending with Alfred is real.
ReplyDeletei mean if young adult Bruce Wayne could disappear in the world hanging with criminals stealing his own product..be in the worst prisons, trained by the league of shadows in batman begins.. then call Alfred like "hey pick me up". I would then assume that Bruce could disappear without anyone recognizing him. I'm sure Bruce recalled where Alfred would go in the cafe fantasy thing he told him and just sit there starting a new fresh with Selina(in which after staring from fresh there is a possibility she would still go back to her previous life but that decision was made after she came back to save batman from bane maybe?). As a viewer i appreciated that master planning from Bruce was too good towards where he could end up siting right across from Alfred. Batman is a super secretive without no one seeing him move. i mean he is not superman but still he was trained by a ninja organization i would think he picked up a couple of things while he was there. It was the great ending that was given here the possible nightwing continuation is great i hope to see more villain's how they would look like within Nolan world of the batman.
@ASSMAN,
DeleteYou make some strong points. It gives moviegoers hope Bruce survives. I think the Nolan brothers used the clues and the ambiguous cafe ending to create discussions.
What will the audience think? Will they go home to search whether the cafe scene is a dream? How many think the Italian cafe is a dream? Do they know the woman sitting next to Bruce? Is she even a focal point in the scene? The searches are two-sided, albeit the majority think otherwise that Bruce is alive.
You take an interesting route to show that Bruce is capable of following a secret plan to make the trip. He remembers exactly where Alfred dines. Showing up at the Italian cafe honors his good friend, trusty butler and former legal guardian. Alfred now has the satisfaction in knowing he didn't let the Wayne's down.
I agree the ending is intriguing. TDKR has a good ending that makes you think. People will discuss the ending a year from now.
Thanks for the comment.

ReplyDeleteThis is the first decent discussion of this subject that I've been able to find online.
ReplyDeleteI'm at odds with all of my friends on this one and it's a little disappointing to me that a lot of folks are unable to see the nuances of the ending (even when it's explained in great detail). In truth, my nine year old son turned around to me before the end credits rolled and asked, "Is Bruce Wayne really alive or is Alfred just choosing to believe that he's alive?" I was about to tell my son that of course, Bruce wayne was alive when the penny dropped and I realized that my son had hit the nail on the head.
Alfred chooses to believe (as we can choose to believe) that Bruce Wayne is alive; certainly there are some ambiguous clues that he may be alive... but I believe that if you watch all three movies and pick up the true heart beat of the story, it's fairly clear that in Nolan's version of the Batman saga, Bruce Wayne dies but Batman continues as Robin John Blake.
Everyone needs to simply look at the Chris Nolan's incredible body of previous work and ask themselves if a silly "at face value" twist ending in the last minutes of the film is really the director's style or is it more likely that he would close his masterpiece of a trilogy with a beautiful, nuanced ending that offered both sacrifice and hope and bears his hallmark of being open to interpretation.
@Ash,
DeleteThanks for the quality analysis. Your son has a strong analytical mind to look beyond the obvious.
Your last sentence sums up Nolan's vision as a great wrier/director (nicely written!) If a moviegoer is not thinking at the movies, then they are not watching a Christopher Nolan movie.
Great work! The twist ending is mere executed to keep the audience rising on the edge of their seats. Nolan dishes out one clue after another, but then the cafe scene is beginning to create dream, hallucination, fantasy and imagination debates.
The majority will take the easy argument to suggest the obvious. Nonetheless, the ending is left open for interpretation to make us think.
In Miller's The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne fakes his death and Alfred dies, as so I read. Is it possible this Italian cafe scene is a last imagination? If we didn't hear anything about Alfred's desire to find Bruce enjoying his life, we would not challenge the cafe as a dream or reality.
The clues are ambiguous. They're not concrete enough to suggest that without a doubt Bruce Wayne lives and we are seeing his new life. We watch the scene unfold from Alfred's point-of-view, suggesting he is having his moment of hope that Bruce survives. Fox, Gordon, and Blake have their moments.
Great comment with a creative touch. Thanks again!
Ash, this is well said. Makes perfect sense :)
ReplyDeletei think Nolan does not wants to discuss about the movie because ...... he does not want to break the hope of the audience...that batman's alive...but he instead planned that he will be not.....but gave clues in the end to give hope....every batman lover will be heartbroken to know that batman's dead.....and i think every above comment makes perfect sense whether it is positive or negative.....my personal opinion .....but anything can be true....i would be more than happy if in the end bruce is alive
ReplyDelete@Arko,
DeleteYou make valid points. We can debate the clues to choose whether Bruce is "dead" or "alive." Discussing the movie inspires people to watch it again.
I would be happy if the ending shows Bruce alive. The clues are not convincing enough to suggest Bruce survived. He would have to plan ahead of time, which it is obvious he tried to take the easy way out with retrieving the remote detonator.
Excellent comment. Thanks again.
He's still alive, like the song.
ReplyDeleteso i read evrything and gotta comment too ;)
ReplyDeleteabove arguments are more or less true, dont wanna repeat them all, but name that clues which persuaded me...
i dont think thats a dream of alfred, couse indeed dreams get verified if they are dreams. Also fox smiles as he understands, that there was a software update, named by wayne. Why. Couse if i made a sofware update (curcial one with autopilot) i would also use it.
If we are speaking of objective and subjective scenes (im no filmproducer) lets have a look at batman carrying the bomb. As long as we see batman, we are near at him (he is near the bomb) but than, when the batflying thing leaves the city, we got a white shot. As if batman activated the autopilot and the bomb got carried away and he wasnt longer needed to controll the plane.
@domi178,
DeleteIf the majority choose your theory, at what point does Batman eject? What Bat plane is his flying in the scene with the 5 seconds? We get a wide shot to show the impact of the atomic bomb.
The autopilot can give us hope to think Batman is alive. Maybe Fox is smiling because Wayne accomplished a tough fix. He noted that a mind like his is needed to complete the repair. He is amazed the auto pilot is repaired.
If we think back to the scene in which Batman indicates he has no autopilot, we may think he is deceiving them or it is possible another used his account to make the repair. Imagine Bruce not knowing the autopilot is available.
I think that Batman wasted too much time pummeling Bane to coerce him into giving up the remote detonator. He also waited until after Miranda admitted there is no way to deactivate the bomb. Batman has enough time to eject and use autopilot?
You make a good argument. However, I still think Bruce is dead. I may change my mind later with analyzing the ending again.
Thanks for contributing.
and i would also mention, that in the first part of the film, batman is ready and wants to die for the city, because he got nothing to loose. But than he first learns to fear death again, second he got an interesting girl and third he got robin to fulfill his former job. now he should use his motherfucking autopilot
Deletenow in the end, when all think he is dead, robin claims the bag, but catwoman didnt wait for her neckleck. Yea she could have stolen it, but (big guess true) she took it, because she wanted to get away instantly with her new lover. ok maybe too big guess.

DeleteIn the beginning, Bruce had Alfred around. Blake and Gordon also convinced Batman to return (Blake to Bruce and Batman to Gordon).
DeleteI believe Bruce always feared death because of losing his parents. He never feared death as Batman. He strong will to escape the hole put him in a position to fear dying. In result, Gotham would fall.
I don't see Bruce faking his death to find happiness. When most professionals are out of the game, they have the desire to return again. Bruce returned to crime fighting in the turning point.
All major plot points are staged to align the story. Fingerprints are stolen in a scheme to show Bruce is unfit to run Wayne Enterprises. Miranda positions herself to assume control. It took her 3 years to gain trust. Nuclear physicist is taken hostage to activate a bomb.
One plot point I disagree with is Alfred talking about seeing Bruce happy at a cafe. We get the same exact ending without explaining how he escapes the plane. It seems there are too many holes to fill to provide a good explanation on how he escapes the plane.
The Batwing fires a few missiles to make a path. The buildings face the bridge. It has to turn right to carry the bomb out to sea. Can autopilot make sharp turns? Or autopilot only flies the plane in a straight path.
There are many points to consider. If Nolan wanted to show a simple ending, he would have given us better clues. Many people are still searching the web to find information on the dream ending. These moviegoers don't know the identity of the woman next to Bruce. I'm sure Selina is positioned in another direction to show Bruce as a central figure.
We see the scene from Alfred's point-of-view. Not once does the point-of-view change to another.
A happy ending is to show Bruce alive. So much of the plot is left out to explain how Bruce escapes. The cafe ending is out of place. We can't expect to watch The Sixth Sense ending that ties up all loose ends.
The Dark Knight Rises ends on a cliffhanger. The last scene provides a better explanation than the cafe scene. Showing the cafe with Bruce there makes the revelation complex since we have preceding clues pounding away at the hope theme.
Thanks for commenting.
ok it makes no sense that anybody else had mad the update... who 6 months had plenty of time. true he could it had used instantly, but he could also had tried to get a new source of energy, at least doesnt want to threw it away. couse atm nobody is able to build a similar thing.
DeleteAlso batman is used to make secrets and wants to impress, why should he mention the autopilot, if he hasnt accomplished his job, maybe he wasnt able to get out of the city before using autopilot, or he wont able to use it, he never gave hope before not being sure to be able to. he should wait for fulfilling his mission.
the white shot could be the people of the city, but mean batman watching the think explode (ok big guess, i admit) and the near shot (without his body), of course to make us guess, only for the time...
he would leave the plane after passing the border of the city, the last big building.
saw i got a new comment
ok gotta be faster than you :D
Deleteno batman is ready to die for the city (he says that to catwoman, i didnt give them all (of lets say batman) and on the opposite bruce got a new meaning in live.
lets give also a look at the main theme of the film RISE.
first bruce rises as batman, couse the city neats him, than batman rises, because he failed and is still needed. eventually bruce rises as person, and batman dies giving them all he got.
bye for at least 10 hours ;)
sry it doesnt come at once and still this is all just my opinion, i respect all other opinions, last clue of all important persons to bruce, our catwoman is missing, who "dreams" or got a evidence for batmans survive. i think, the dreams or evidences start with alfred sitting in the caffee, than comes our police officer, fox, robin, alfred again (climax in important people knowing batmans identity) but the at the moment most important person, catwoman misses, for she is with bruce.
Deleteso thats my opinion why batman survived:
1. at the beginning bruce doesnt want to live any longer, but batman has to come back. he is ready to get killed in the fight (as alfred fears) but he fails, gets in prison. Batman has to come back to save the city but also bruce got (for me) another meaning in live except being batman, his ladie. So when batman dies and gives evrything to his city, but bruce got another meaning in live. This explanation fits perfectly in the title of the movie, the RISE of the dark knight (or more the rise of our beloved bruce)
2. Still there is no evidence for that, but its a very probably ending. As alfread goes to the caffee, police officer founds that bat sign, mr fox understands that a autopilot might bee, probably installed, couse nobody else than bruce thouched that bat plane (lets remeber fox talking to bruce about how good his new plane would be, "it flies quite good even without autopilo"t, fox wonderes "you should be the autopilot" (not exactly, watched it in german), than we understand that there might be coming a robin film, and at the end alfred sees bruce. A nice climax and with evry possibility it becomes more obvious to me that bruce survived, still catwoman (im not good with names as u may have noticed) is missing, and the necklake of bruces' mother. They both could be with bruce.
This explanation helps to understand why batman hasnt thrown away the nuclear bomb asap. he wanted to live on and to save that bomb for the future. nobody would throw away that possibility for humanity, expecialy if the dr. who created it, died. it was the only possibility left, for saving the city. This also helps my thesis above. When bruce wanted to die anyway, he could have taken the bomb immedately even if a not exploded nuclear bomb is always better than a exploded one.
So how to survive if u carry a exploding bomb, ofc autopilot, which was almost proofen installed. As the main obstacle the city and his buildings have been overcome, autopilot could flew away that bomb.
To bad that im not a filmwriter, anyway i could discuss with you in a scietific way, this is only the opinion from a interested spectator
@Domni178,
DeleteYou provided a quality explanation. Of course, the movie ending is arranged to make us think beyond exposition and visual aesthetics.
The Two of Two Cities reference Gordon shares at Bruce's private funeral provides an explanation that Bruce died to save his city.
Batman deceived Selina that he had no autopilot. Either this dialogue is executed as showing us how much a hero Bruce really is, or Batman planned to escape crime fighting. It leads me to believe that the Batman kept the autopilot secret to not be viewed as hero. He wanted to do what was right to save Gotham. In the movie end, Bruce and Batman have meaning as one unit.
Your explanation is well-written. I understand your analysis. Thanks for sharing. Would be interested in hearing more of your theories.
Urology?! I guess you mean eulogy.
ReplyDeleteI meant eulogy. Thanks for pointing it out.
DeleteIt's too much of a coincidence imo for bruce to have died..
ReplyDeleteThe auto pilot being fixed
selina being there with bruce (who had on his mothers necklace)
The bat signal being fixed
Yes i think batman ''died'' but i think bruce actually lived

Ok people we obviously see selina's face when she turns her head sideways. With that being said alfred has no reason to see her if it was a dream. Plus we dont see get a doubletake back to the table to see him missing or fading away. Dreams in movies show that concept and this movie didnt so yes Bruce is alive and kicking. The dude's a master detective, 100% positive he can be a master death faker. Plus in the movie bruce discussed wanting to be able to get away to a place like Italy. And before anyone tries to question this quote watch the movie again. Its common knowledge
ReplyDeleteAnd for all we know when Alfred got out of his seat, he couldve been walking over to go sit with bruce and selina but of course the scene cut away
ReplyDeleteexcellent issues altogether, you simply received a new reader.

I don't leave many comments, but I browsed some comments on "Batman ending explained". I do have 2 questions for you if you do not mind. Is it only me or does it appear like a few of these comments look as if they are written by brain dead individuals? :-P And, if you are writing on other places, I would like to follow anything new you have to post. Could you post a list of the complete urls of all your social sites like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
